Issue #1: Welcome to The Layman's AI

We’re gonna begin from the very basics.

Every week, small business owners are asking the same question: should I be using ChatGPT or Claude?

It's the right question. But most comparisons are written for developers and tech teams, not for someone running a real business. So let's fix that.

🔧 Tool of the Week: ChatGPT vs Claude

Both tools cost $20/month on their paid plans. Both can write emails, summarize documents, answer questions, and help you brainstorm. On the surface, they look almost identical.

They're not.

Here's what actually matters for a small business owner:

Use Claude if you:

  • Work with long documents: contracts, reports, proposals. Claude's 200K token context window beats ChatGPT's 128K, meaning it can handle much larger files without losing track.

  • Need polished, natural writing. Claude is the stronger pick for nuanced, brand-aligned writing: emails, marketing copy, anything with a specific tone.

  • Want an AI that pushes back. Claude will flag weak ideas and offer alternatives rather than just telling you what you want to hear.

Use ChatGPT if you:

  • Need images. ChatGPT supports image generation via DALL-E, Claude does not generate images natively.

  • Live in other tools. ChatGPT's integrations are more ubiquitous, browser extensions, Microsoft Office, and more apps connect to it out of the box.

  • Want speed and flexibility. ChatGPT tends to just do what you ask without questioning it, faster for simple, high-volume tasks.

The verdict: Neither wins outright. Many business owners use both — ChatGPT for brainstorming and quick drafts, Claude for deep analysis, long documents, and precise writing. If you can only pick one, start with whichever matches your most frequent daily task.

Price: Both free plans exist but are limited. Paid plans start at $20/month each.

The Practical Play

Pick one task you do every week that takes longer than it should, let’s say: writing a client update, summarizing a meeting, drafting a proposal and run it through both tools this week using the same prompt.

Don't just read about the difference. Feel it. You'll know which one fits your workflow within 20 minutes.

📰 News That Matters

Anthropic recently announced it would not allow Claude to be used for certain military applications. a move that drew attention and put it at odds with some government contracts. For small business owners, this changes nothing practically. But it does signal that Anthropic is positioning Claude as a more values-driven, privacy-conscious tool, which may matter to you if client data is involved.

🚫 Skip This

The $100-$200/month "Pro" tiers for either tool. The premium tiers: Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro, run $100-$200/month and are built for power users running hundreds of queries daily. The $20/month plans are more than enough to start. Don't let anyone upsell you until you've maxed out the basics.

That's it for Issue #1. Five minutes. Four things. One action to take today.

If this was useful, forward it to one business owner who's still confused about AI. That's the best compliment you can give a newsletter.

Until next issue, Kris
