Launched October 21. US waitlist for Claude Pro and Max subscribers. No extra charge.
Most AI tools wait for you to ask. That is fine for writing a caption. It is useless for what really hurts a small business owner: the email you missed, the invoice nobody chased, the client call that clashes with your flight.
Claude Duet is Anthropic's attempt to fix that. It is a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It flags what needs attention, completes tasks you give it, keeps going when you step away, and checks with you before it acts.
🔧 Tool of the Week: Claude Duet
Duet is a research preview, which means it is early and Anthropic is still tuning it. Based on Anthropic's own launch page and coverage from several tech sites, here is what it includes:
A daily brief. Each morning it sends a short summary of the most important items across your connected apps.
Background monitoring. It checks your connected accounts every few hours and messages you only when something needs your attention. You choose what you hear about and how often.
Tasks you hand off. Simple jobs like scheduling a meeting, or bigger ones like building a dashboard, a forecast, or a small web app. You give the goal, and it picks the apps and steps.
Its own computer. It runs on a virtual machine with its own browser in the cloud, so your laptop or phone does not need to stay on. You get a notification when a task finishes or needs your review.
Lots of connections. Anthropic says it can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, DocuSign, HubSpot, Canva, and Shopify. Your memory, skills, and connected apps carry over from your Claude account. You talk to it by typing or voice in one ongoing thread.
Purchases. It can buy through Stripe's Link wallet using a virtual card, so you don’t share your real card number. It confirms the item with you first.
The approval rules. It can read, draft, and prepare work on its own. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it waits for your yes. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are off limits.
The verdict: For an owner who is the whole back office, this is the closest thing yet to a part-time chief of staff. But it is a preview, so treat it as a trial, not a system you depend on.
🧪 Real Business Example
Take a two-person bookkeeping and tax prep practice in Columbus, Ohio, with about 60 small business clients. The owner uses Gmail, QuickBooks, DocuSign, and Slack, and spends the first hour of every day triaging.
She connects Gmail, QuickBooks, and DocuSign only, and tells Duet to alert her about three things: client emails that mention a deadline, invoices more than 14 days overdue, and engagement letters waiting on a signature.
Each morning the brief tells her which clients need a reply today. Midday, Duet flags two unsigned engagement letters and drafts a reminder for each. She approves one, edits the other, and moves on. It prepares overdue invoice reminders and waits for her approval.
This is an illustration, not a report of results. Anthropic itself says the early version can misread a thread or misjudge urgency.
📋 Step-by-Step: Try It Safely
Check that you have a Claude Pro or Max plan and are in the US. The preview is not yet available on Team or Enterprise plans or outside the US.
Join the waitlist. Access is rolling out in waves.
When you get in, install the app on iOS or Android, or use claude.ai.
Connect two or three tools where a missed item costs you money. Anthropic's own advice is to start small. Email plus your invoicing tool is a good pair.
Tell it what to alert you about and how often, such as "overdue invoices over $500."
Run it for one day and check how much of your usage allowance it used before assigning anything big.
Keep every approval on. Read each action before you say yes.
After a week, review what it caught and what it missed.
❓ The Dumb Question
"Can it spend my money or send emails to my clients on its own?"
Not without asking. According to Anthropic, it shows you any message, payment, signature, or deletion and waits for your approval first. It blocks moving money between accounts and trading securities entirely.
It also says Duet never directly sees your passwords. Still, this is a preview, so start with low-stakes tasks and read every approval card.
💰 What It'll Cost You
Option | Cost |
|---|---|
Claude Duet | No extra charge, included with Pro and Max |
Claude Pro | $20/month |
Claude Max | $100 or $200/month |
ChatGPT Dots (comparison) | Needs ChatGPT Pro, from about $100/month |
Meta Muse (comparison) | Free for most use, US only |
Fyxer (email assistant) | About $37 to $49/month |
Reclaim.ai (calendar only) | About $10 to $12/seat/month |
The catch: Duet's background checks and tasks draw from the same usage limits as your normal chats, and big jobs like a financial model or a deck use more. The comparison prices come from a third party roundup, so check each vendor's own page.
⚡ The Practical Play
This week, write down the three things that cost you money when you miss them, such as a customer complaint, an overdue invoice, or a contract waiting on a signature.
That is your alert list for Duet, ChatGPT Dots, or even a simple email filter.
📰 News That Matters
Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots launched in September, and Grok Bot has been in beta since August. All four run on a hosted computer.
The difference is control. One roundup says Duet always waits for approval on four action types, while Dots lets you write your own rules for what is allowed, needs approval, or is blocked. Pick based on which assistant you already pay for.
🚫 Skip This
Skip connecting everything on day one.
Anthropic says Duet checks only every few hours, so it can miss items that arrive in between, and it cannot yet show you its browser.
More connections also mean more places a misread email can cause a problem. Start with email and one money tool, and widen access after a clean week.
Until next issue, Kris
