900,000 installs. One consistent request from about a third of them: help me sell.

Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business in May 2026 with 15 workflows and 7 integrations, all focused on the back office — invoicing, payroll, cash flow, bookkeeping.

It was a strong start for a tool that had never existed before.

On September 15, they shipped the expansion owners had been asking for. 43 workflows total, 27 new integrations, and a shift in focus from running the business to growing it.

This issue is the practical guide to what actually changed and which workflows are worth enabling first.

🔧 Tool of the Week: Claude for Small Business (September Update)

Claude for Small Business runs as a plugin inside Claude Cowork — the desktop app where Claude works directly with your files and connected tools. The September 15 update didn't change how it works. It expanded what it can do.

What was there from May (still included): Finance workflows — payroll planning, cash flow forecasting, invoice chasing, month-end close, tax prep.

Connected to QuickBooks, PayPal, DocuSign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, HubSpot, and Canva.

What's new in September:

The 5 flagship workflows:

1. Weekly Brief — every Monday morning, before you open anything else, Claude assembles your cash position, sales compared against the previous week, pipeline movement, overdue invoices, and the three things that need your attention. One page. Works with all 37 connected partners.

This is the single highest-leverage workflow for any small business owner who currently starts the week unsure where things stand.

2. Responding to Inbound Leads — after-hours enquiries get qualified, answered, and logged automatically.

A lead comes in at 11pm through your website, your Shopify store, or your CRM. Claude reads it, assesses fit against your criteria, drafts a personalised response, and stages it for your approval — or sends automatically if you've enabled that. Connects with 15 partners including Shopify, Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zapier.

3. Writing Proposals — you send a voice memo, a few notes, or a rough brief. Claude turns it into a priced, branded proposal using your past jobs as reference. It pulls the scope from your notes, the pricing from your history, and your brand voice from the examples you've given it.

Connects with 17 partners. This is the workflow that converts the most time — a task that typically takes 45–90 minutes collapses to a 10-minute review.

4. Marketing Campaigns — next week's social posts, email sequences, and review replies, staged for your approval.

Claude plans the campaign, writes the content, and queues it in your connected tools (TikTok Business, Stripe, Square, Zoom, Xero, and more). You review and approve before anything goes live. 16 connector integrations.

5. Closing the Books — reconciled accounts and a close packet ready for your accountant at month end. 14 connector integrations including Xero, QuickBooks, Stripe, Square, and Gusto.

The 27 new integrations: Shopify, Salesforce, TikTok Business Tools, Atlassian, Zoom, Xero, Gusto, Square, Stripe, Zapier, and 17 others — alongside the original 7 (QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365).

Total connector ecosystem: 37 partners.

How every workflow works by default: Claude drafts and stages the output. Nothing sends, posts, or pays without your explicit approval.

Once you've seen a workflow perform correctly enough times, you can switch individual workflows to run automatically on a schedule you choose.

The verdict: The May launch made Claude useful for owners who were already buried in back-office admin. The September update makes it useful for owners who want to grow — specifically the third who told Anthropic "help me sell."

For any small business with a sales pipeline, a proposal process, or inbound leads that arrive outside business hours, the new workflows are where the ROI is.

🧪 Real Business Example

A two-person interior design consultancy had been using Claude for Small Business since June — primarily for the Weekly Brief and invoice chasing.

Back-office time had dropped significantly. But their proposal writing was still a bottleneck: each proposal took one of the two partners 60–90 minutes to produce, and they were losing jobs to faster competitors who could turn around quotes the same day.

After enabling the Proposals workflow in mid-September, their process: leave a 3-minute voice memo on the drive back from a client walkthrough — what the client wants, rough scope, any special considerations. Claude pulls pricing from their past 12 jobs, writes the full proposal in their brand voice, and stages it for review in their inbox.

Review and send: 12 minutes. Same-day proposals, every time, without a partner spending an hour at their desk.

In their first two weeks with the workflow: three proposals sent same-day that previously would have gone out the next morning. One of the three was won specifically because the client mentioned they appreciated the turnaround speed. That job billed $4,200.

📋 Step-by-Step: Get the September Update Running Today

If you're already on Claude for Small Business — the September workflows are available now. If you haven't set it up yet, here's the full path:

  1. Download Claude Desktop at claude.ai/download if you haven't already

  2. Install the plugin — open Claude Cowork, search the plugin directory for "Claude for Small Business," and install it. Or go directly to claude.com/plugins/small-business.

  3. Run the onboarding command — type /smb-onboard in Claude Cowork or ask Claude to "help me get set up." It walks you through connecting your tools.

  4. Connect your highest-priority integrations first — don't try to connect all 37 at once. Start with the tools where your biggest time drains live. For most small businesses: QuickBooks or Xero (finance), HubSpot or Salesforce (leads), Canva (marketing). Add more once those are working.

  5. Enable the Weekly Brief first — this is the lowest-risk, highest-payoff starting point. It runs once a week, requires no external action, and immediately shows you how well Claude understands your business data. If the Brief is accurate and useful, you'll know the foundation is solid before enabling action-taking workflows.

  6. Test Proposals with a real brief — find a recent job where you remember the scope and pricing. Send Claude a voice memo or a few bullet points describing it. See how close the proposal comes to what you'd actually send. This calibration run tells you how much the workflow needs fine-tuning before you rely on it for live clients.

  7. Enable approval mode for anything client-facing — keep every workflow in approval mode (the default) until you've reviewed at least 10 outputs from it. Don't switch to automatic sending on email or proposals until you've built genuine confidence in the output quality.

  8. Check Claude Academy at academy.claude.com for the step-by-step install guide and full workflow list — Anthropic posted a complete reference there alongside the September update.

❓ The Dumb Question

"I already have HubSpot / Salesforce / Shopify with their own AI features. Why would I add Claude on top?"

Because each platform's AI only knows what's inside that platform. HubSpot's AI knows your CRM data. Shopify's AI knows your store data.

Xero's AI knows your financial data. Claude for Small Business connects all of them simultaneously and can work across all of them in a single workflow.

The Weekly Brief that pulls your cash position from Xero, your pipeline from HubSpot, and your overdue invoices from QuickBooks in one Monday morning summary — none of those platforms can produce that on their own because none of them can see the others. Claude's value in this context isn't replacing any individual tool's AI.

It's being the connective layer that makes all of them work together.

The plugin is free. The workflows are free. What you pay is your existing Claude plan.

If you're already on Claude Pro at $20/month and use any two of the 37 connected tools, there's no additional cost to unlock every workflow.

One note on the Team plan recommendation: Anthropic specifically recommends Team ($30/user/month) for businesses with more than one person, because it allows multiple team members to access shared workflows and see each other's outputs within a single business account.

Solo operators are fully covered by Pro.

⚡ The Practical Play

This week: if you're on any paid Claude plan, install the Claude for Small Business plugin and run /smb-onboard.

Connect one tool — whichever holds the data you look at most often: your accounting software, your CRM, or your project management tool. Then run the Weekly Brief.

That single output — one page with your cash, sales, pipeline, and overdue invoices — is worth the 20-minute setup on its own. Everything else can come after.

📰 News That Matters

900,000 installs in four months is the fastest adoption of any Anthropic product to date. The signal from that number: small business owners aren't waiting to be convinced that AI is useful.

They're actively looking for tools that connect to what they already have and run real tasks rather than just chatting.

The September update — specifically the shift toward sales and marketing workflows — reflects what Anthropic learned from those 900,000 installs: the back office was a great entry point, but growth is where owners actually want help.

The next phase to watch: Anthropic announced a fall tour of free in-person workshops in 10 US cities alongside 750+ community workshops globally.

They're not just building a product — they're building the training infrastructure to close the gap between installation and actual use.

🚫 Skip This

Installing all 37 integrations on day one. The temptation with a tool this comprehensive is to connect everything immediately and unlock the full potential all at once.

What actually happens: you end up with a complex, partially-configured system where outputs are unreliable because Claude is working with incomplete or inconsistent data from too many sources at once.

The businesses getting the most out of Claude for Small Business are the ones who started with two or three integrations, verified the outputs were accurate, then added more. Fewer connections, better results.

More connections too fast, confusion. Add one integration per week until you've validated each one before moving to the next.

Until next issue, Kris
