State of Product reveals what AI still hasn’t solved

80% of product professionals say AI helps them ship faster, but customers aren’t seeing value any sooner. Atlassian’s State of Product 2027 explores the gains AI is delivering and the challenges that remain, from decision-making that hasn’t kept pace to gut instinct overriding customer evidence.

Hit #2 on Product Hunt on October 8. Open source. Y Combinator-backed.

If you have ever looked at SEO software, you know the price shock. The big names run well over $100 a month, and most small businesses use about a tenth of the features. So they either skip SEO tools completely or guess.

OpenSEO takes a different approach: you pay for the data you actually use, and the software is free and open source. It also plugs into AI assistants like Claude, so you can ask questions about your website in plain English.

🔧 Tool of the Week: OpenSEO

OpenSEO is an SEO platform built to be an alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs. According to its website and GitHub page, here is what it includes:

Keyword research. Ideas, search demand, difficulty, and intent for any keyword, plus live search results.

Competitor research. See how visible a competitor's site is and which keywords bring them traffic.

Site audit. Checks your pages for technical and on-page SEO problems.

Backlinks. See who links to you and to your competitors.

Rank tracking. Watch where your pages sit for the keywords you care about over time.

AI visibility. Track whether AI tools mention or cite your business, and compare answers across different models. This ties directly to what we covered in Issue #36.

Google Search Console connection. Pull in your real performance data.

AI assistant connection. OpenSEO has an MCP connection that lets Claude and similar assistants use your SEO data. The site lists commands such as an SEO coach, an audit, and a competitor analysis, so you can simply ask for them.

The data behind it comes from a provider called DataForSEO. The software is released under the MIT license, so anyone can use it.

The verdict: It is the most affordable full SEO toolkit I have seen. But it is aimed at people comfortable with a bit of setup, and there is one important caveat about data costs, covered below.

🧪 Real Business Example

Take a landscaping company in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a five-page website and a part-time marketer. They pay nothing for SEO today because the tools are too expensive.

They sign up for the hosted OpenSEO plan, connect Google Search Console, and ask Claude through the connection: "Audit our site, then find 20 local keywords our two biggest competitors rank for that we do not." Claude runs the audit and the competitor research, then saves the findings as a report.

The report shows the site is missing pages for services competitors rank for, like drainage work and retaining walls, and that two pages have no page titles. They fix the titles that afternoon and add two service pages the next week.

This is an illustration, not a case study. SEO results take weeks, and nothing is guaranteed.

📋 Step-by-Step: Try It This Week

  1. Go to openseo.so. The site says no credit card is needed to sign up and offers free tools like a backlink checker and keyword generator, so try those first.

  2. Create a project for your website.

  3. Connect Google Search Console. This gives you your real search data, which is the most reliable source there is.

  4. Run a site audit on your own website and fix the top three issues.

  5. Run keyword research for your main service plus your city, for example, "emergency plumber Charlotte."

  6. Run a competitor check on the business that always shows up above you.

  7. Optional: connect Claude through the MCP link so you can ask for reports in plain English. Follow the setup guide on the OpenSEO site.

  8. Check the AI visibility feature to see whether AI tools mention you for your key searches.

Self-hosting is also possible, but it requires a Cloudflare account and a DataForSEO key, and it's built for technical users. If you are not technical, use the hosted version.

❓ The Dumb Question

"If it is open source, why am I paying anything?"

Because the software is free, but the data isn’t. OpenSEO pulls its search numbers from DataForSEO, which charges per request. If you self-host, you pay DataForSEO directly. If you use the hosted version, the project's README says it costs $10 a month and adds a 28% markup on those data requests. Open source means you can see the code, run it yourself, and avoid lock-in. That doesn’t mean the data costs vanish.

💰 What It'll Cost You

Option

Cost

OpenSEO software

Free, open source (MIT license)

OpenSEO hosted plan

$10/month, plus usage

Hosted data markup

28% on data requests, per the README

Self-hosting

Free hosting on Cloudflare's free plan, plus your own DataForSEO usage

Typical self-hosted usage

About $0.0006 per search query, per one guide

Semrush and Ahrefs (comparison)

About $129 to $140 a month, per one third-party guide

One consultant reported spending about $0.50 in a heavy research week. That is one person's experience, not a benchmark. If you track thousands of keywords constantly, pay-per-use pricing could end up costing more than a subscription.

⚡ The Practical Play

This week: run a site audit on your own website and fix three things. Even if you never touch another feature, an audit is the cheapest way to find broken pages, missing titles and slow spots that quietly hurt your search ranking.

Then check Google Search Console for the queries your site already shows up for. Pick one on page two and improve it. It is the lowest effort SEO win there is.

📰 News That Matters

OpenSEO hit #1 on Product Hunt in July, and #2 on October 8, and its GitHub page has more than 24,000 stars. One reviewer asked for Plausible analytics support, and the founder said it could arrive by the end of the year.

The bigger trend is SEO tools built for AI assistants first. Expect the old subscription tools to add similar connections soon.

🚫 Skip This

Skip it if you want a polished tool with someone to call when it breaks. OpenSEO is young. Its backlink database is much smaller than Ahrefs, which matters if you do heavy link building, and both tools' numbers are estimates anyway. Also skip trusting AI-generated SEO advice blindly. Treat Claude's suggestions as a starting list, and check them against Google Search Console, the real source of truth for your site.

Until next issue, Kris
